How the use of fiber optic sensors for borehole seismic can reduce carbon emissions?

21 Aug 2023

The use of fiber optic sensing technology for borehole seismic: the ability to simultaneously record VSPs (Vertical Seismic Profiles) in downhole wells, resulting in a significant reduction in acquisition time and carbon dioxide emissions. The challenge faced by researchers was to obtain high-resolution borehole seismic images in downhole wells without deferring production from the platform. The conventional approach, using a downhole geophone method, would have taken a staggering month, leading to a considerable loss in production. However, a solution emerged in the form of the fiber optic borehole seismic system. This innovative approach involved the installation of fiber optic cables in wells, allowing for the recording of borehole seismic data simultaneously along the full length of the wellbores. This technique provides an exciting glimpse into the future of seismic acquisition, highlighting the potential for fiber optics to revolutionize the borehole seismic industry. The ability to capture detailed seismic data in a fraction of the time and with minimal environmental impact opens up new possibilities for exploration and production companies. It should be noted, that the DFOS along with a suitable downhole cables, simultaneously recording VSPs in downhole wells showcases the immense potential of this technology. Survey results on the use of SlickLight

25 Jul 2023

A couple of months ago we published an article about an innovative and multifunctional cable SlickLight. Recently, we conducted a survey to gather opinions on where this cable is best used. The results of this survey are in the chart below to provide insight when deciding where to apply SlickLight. There are no wrong or right answers, instead, we wanted to focus on the key benefits and receive feedback based on your experience in well intervention. Among the answers were flowing wells, gas production wells, gas lift wells and wells with ESP. Gas production wells got most of the votes, followed by gas lift wells and wells with ESP. Because of its simplicity and related efficiency, SlickLight technology is also very convenient for many gas and gas lift wells. For the gas wells this is because of the benefits of having small footprint and perfectly roundness of the cable with corrosion resistant metal jacket. For the gas lift wells other benefits add to it – firstly, access to the entire length of the well is not being hindered by the pump as with other artificial lift techniques. Also, in many cases, the amount of equipment, personnel and operation involved is reduced compared to other well-logging techniques. Even though flowing wells got the least number of votes, however it is also very effective and beneficial to use SlickLight technology for this application. SlickLight is an efficient way to take measurements in flowing wells without shutting them down or disrupting wells operations. Simplified sealing technique at wellhead and cable integrated pressure migration barrier make it one of the most effective options for the flowing and gas wells. How fiber optic cables could warn you of an earthquake

21 Jun 2023

At present, it is difficult to call the earthquake warning industry sufficiently advanced. No matter how hard modern scientists try, the maximum amount of time that people at the epicenter of an earthquake can be warned is still minimal. However, there is a technology in place that is able to recognize an incipient earthquake and notify at-risk people seconds before the shaking starts. This technology is called distributed acoustic sensing, or DAS.

Currently, one of the objectives in investments in DAS systems for seismic purposes is to use acquired data for optimization in designing modern houses and buildings to easier deal with earthquakes.

As at Wires&Bytes we strive to benefit society first and foremost, we feel the contribution in producing fiber optic cables which make an indispensable part of DAS system. Though the field is still in its infancy, DAS could tap into the fiber optic cables buried under our feet as a sprawling, ultra-sensitive network for detecting seismic waves. These cables are used for telecommunications, but they can be repurposed for sensing earthquakes and volcanic eruptions because the ground movement slightly disrupts the light traveling through the cable, creating a distinct signal.

One of the first applications of this technology was demonstrated by Japanese scientists after the Hokkaido earthquake in 1993. They noticed that data from optical cables in the disaster area showed strong vibrations and decided to use this information to create a warning system for possible earthquakes. Subsequently, this technology became more advanced and was widely used in other regions of the world at risk of earthquakes.

For example, here’s how Google’s system ShakeAlert works in USA: when an earthquake occurs, it sends softer seismic waves, known as P waves, through the ground. Not everyone in the earthquake area will feel these, but a network of 1,300 USGS sensors do. When four sensors are simultaneously triggered, they send an alert to a data processing center. If that data meets the right criteria, the ShakeAlert system determines that stronger S waves, the kind that can cause damage and hurt people, could be on the way. It’s then that warning systems will interpret the data and send out alerts.

Wires&Bytes manufactures a range of cables for structural health monitoring which can be integrated into sensing systems to detect earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other ground movements. The most versatile of the cables in this group is Non-metallic MultiSense, as it combines all types of distributed sensing (DTS, DAS, DSS) in one design and it is also characterized by increased acoustic sensitivity. You can find out more about this cable’s capabilities on our website.

Take care of yourselves!
