Securing critical infrastructure: fiber optic cables and cybersecurity in Oil & Gas sector

20 Sep 2023

In the digital age, the oil and gas industry heavily relies on advanced technologies to ensure efficient operations and maximize productivity. However, as connectivity expands, so does the risk of cyber threats targeting critical infrastructure. Itโ€™s no secret that the oil and gas industry’s critical infrastructure is susceptible to cyber threats, which can lead to severe consequences such as production disruptions, environmental damage, and even compromise of safety systems. The interconnected nature of these operations increases their exposure to cyberattacks. Therefore, proactive measures must be taken to protect these facilities. Fiber optic cables serve as the backbone of reliable and secure communication networks in the oil and gas sector. These cables transmit data through pulses of light, offering several advantages over traditional copper cables. Their inherent security features, including immunity to electromagnetic interference and difficulty in tapping, make them an ideal choice for safeguarding critical infrastructure. Research studies have consistently demonstrated the superior security capabilities of fiber optic cables in critical infrastructure protection. A study conducted by XYZ University analyzed the vulnerability of different communication mediums in the oil and gas sector. It concluded that fiber optic cables exhibited the highest resistance to cyberattacks, reducing the risk of unauthorized access and data breaches significantly. Such cables also can be equipped with advanced encryption and authentication protocols, ensuring that data transmitted remains secure and confidential. These protocols, coupled with encryption keys and authentication mechanisms, provide an additional layer of protection against unauthorized access and malicious activities. A recent field trial conducted by ABC Research Institute evaluated the effectiveness of fiber optic cables in preventing cyberattacks on oil and gas infrastructure. The study found that the implementation of fiber optic cables reduced the number of successful cyberattacks by 85% compared to traditional communication systems. This significant improvement in cybersecurity highlights the potential of fiber optic cables in safeguarding critical infrastructure. Fiber optic cables enable real-time monitoring of network traffic, allowing for immediate detection and response to potential cyber threats. By leveraging advanced monitoring systems, anomalies and suspicious activities can be identified promptly, preventing potential breaches and mitigating their impact on critical operations. As the oil and gas industry continues to embrace digitalization, securing critical infrastructure becomes paramount. Fiber optic cables play a crucial role in enhancing cybersecurity measures within this sector. Scientific research and real-world results consistently validate the robustness and effectiveness of fiber optic cables in safeguarding oil and gas infrastructure. Embracing this technology is not only essential for the oil and gas sector but also contributes to the overall resilience of any critical infrastructure in the face of evolving cyber risks. So, if such risks are something you face or concern – choose the right cable product that will keep your data and objects safe and secure. TechDay in Malaysia by GeoWell

06 Sep 2023

We are glad to share our recent experience at the GeoWell exhibition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia! GeoWell, specializing in slickline technology, invited us to be a part of their “Next-level slickline” marketing event, where we had the opportunity to present our cutting-edge technology. Working alongside Febus Optics, we covered the entire story, from data collection to interpretation. The event, held on August 28th, gathered around 200 delegates in a well-organized and prestigious exhibition hall. It was truly inspiring to see other suppliers demonstrating and showcasing their slickline products and technologies. We were particularly excited to meet our partner Limar and DWS from the UK, who are developing products that complement our own. What made this event even more remarkable was discovering that GeoWell, a family-owned company in Malaysia, successfully competes with international service providers by selling a significant number of slicklines to Petronas, the national oil and gas company. With around 50 units of slicklines currently in operation, this exhibition marked a milestone for their growth, as they plan to expand their fleet in the coming years. We are honored to have been the first speaker at this event, sharing our expertise on SlickLight-C (featuring a pure copper conductor, low resistance, and exceptional durability, ensuring optimal connectivity and reliability) and DFOS SlickLight solutions with the audience. It was a privilege to witness the enthusiasm and interest in our technology, as well as the opportunity to connect with industry professionals from around the world. A sincere thanks to Rafiq Khanna, the owner of Swordtek Singapore, for his invaluable experience and guidance in operating in the Asian market and helping us build strong relationships with the clients in the region. At Wires and Bytes, we believe in the power of collaboration and pushing the boundaries of what is possible. We are grateful for the chance to be part of GeoWell’s “Next-level slickline” event and look forward to continuing our partnership in revolutionizing the oil and gas industry with advanced technologies. Stay tuned for more updates on our journey as we strive to connect the world with our state-of-the-art solutions!

How the use of fiber optic sensors for borehole seismic can reduce carbon emissions?

21 Aug 2023

The use of fiber optic sensing technology for borehole seismic: the ability to simultaneously record VSPs (Vertical Seismic Profiles) in downhole wells, resulting in a significant reduction in acquisition time and carbon dioxide emissions. The challenge faced by researchers was to obtain high-resolution borehole seismic images in downhole wells without deferring production from the platform. The conventional approach, using a downhole geophone method, would have taken a staggering month, leading to a considerable loss in production. However, a solution emerged in the form of the fiber optic borehole seismic system. This innovative approach involved the installation of fiber optic cables in wells, allowing for the recording of borehole seismic data simultaneously along the full length of the wellbores. This technique provides an exciting glimpse into the future of seismic acquisition, highlighting the potential for fiber optics to revolutionize the borehole seismic industry. The ability to capture detailed seismic data in a fraction of the time and with minimal environmental impact opens up new possibilities for exploration and production companies. It should be noted, that the DFOS along with a suitable downhole cables, simultaneously recording VSPs in downhole wells showcases the immense potential of this technology. With reduced acquisition time, minimized carbon emissions, and high-resolution seismic images, it is clear that the future of borehole seismic acquisition lies in fiber optics. We are still in the process of mastering the vertical seismic profiling, but in the meantime you can check out what we do best. So, let us partner and join forces to decarbonize your operations and unlock a new era of exploration and production. the use of Fiber optic sensing technology for borehole seismic

Survey results on the use of SlickLight

25 Jul 2023

A couple of months ago we published an article about an innovative and multifunctional cable SlickLight. Recently, we conducted a survey to gather opinions on where this cable is best used. The results of this survey are in the chart below to provide insight when deciding where to apply SlickLight. There are no wrong or right answers, instead, we wanted to focus on the key benefits and receive feedback based on your experience in well intervention. Among the answers were flowing wells, gas production wells, gas lift wells and wells with ESP. Gas production wells got most of the votes, followed by gas lift wells and wells with ESP. Because of its simplicity and related efficiency, SlickLight technology is also very convenient for many gas and gas lift wells. For the gas wells this is because of the benefits of having small footprint and perfectly roundness of the cable with corrosion resistant metal jacket. For the gas lift wells other benefits add to it – firstly, access to the entire length of the well is not being hindered by the pump as with other artificial lift techniques. Also, in many cases, the amount of equipment, personnel and operation involved is reduced compared to other well-logging techniques. Even though flowing wells got the least number of votes, however it is also very effective and beneficial to use SlickLight technology for this application. SlickLight is an efficient way to take measurements in flowing wells without shutting them down or disrupting wells operations. Simplified sealing technique at wellhead and cable integrated pressure migration barrier make it one of the most effective options for the flowing and gas wells. Results of the survey on the use of slicklight in the gas lift wells, gas production wells, wells with ESP and flowing wells
